From Uncertain Path to Confident Designer

Before joining the Instructional Design Bootcamp, Catherine Schwebel was working in corporate training, developing onboarding and orientation experiences. But she wasn’t sure how to take the next step into a full-fledged instructional design role. She knew she had transferable skills, but building a standout portfolio and navigating the competitive job market on her own felt overwhelming.

That changed when she joined our program. “The coursework is challenging in the best way,” Catherine shared, “and I always felt like I was working on relevant, in-demand skills that would set me apart.”

With the help of weekly support meetings and detailed feedback from her dedicated mentor, Catherine found the structure and encouragement she needed to move forward with confidence.

“Because of the program, I feel prepared and excited for this next stage of my career.”

Though she’s still interviewing for roles, Catherine has already seen strong traction in her job search—and her polished, scenario-based portfolio project is opening doors across the industry.

Reducing Medication Errors with Scenario-Based Learning

For her flagship project, Catherine tackled a real-world challenge: reducing medication errors among nurses.

Drawing on the support of a subject matter expert in the field, she designed a scenario-based learning experience that guides nurses through critical thinking and best practices in medication administration.

“I’m especially proud of how this project blends real-life context with clean, visual storytelling,” Catherine said. “It feels like something that could make a real difference.”

Catherine brought the project to life with strong visual design, incorporating AI-generated images to simulate realistic clinical environments. The branching structure reinforces decision-making and accountability, while her attention to both aesthetics and instructional theory makes the experience engaging and effective.

“I worked with a nurse as my SME to ensure everything in the module was accurate and applicable.”

A Portfolio That Sparks Conversations

Catherine’s portfolio not only reflects her sharp eye for visual design, but also her ability to think like a learning experience designer.

With help from her ID mentor and detailed guidance from the program, she refined her site’s structure, language, and user experience.

The result? A professional portfolio that highlights her strengths and tells a clear story.

Since publishing, she’s received significant interest from employers and has already completed several rounds of interviews.

While she hasn’t landed a role yet, Catherine feels equipped and optimistic—prepared with a project she's proud of and a deepened understanding of what the field demands.

“Thanks to the program, I’m now prepared and excited to move into instructional design with a portfolio I’m proud of.”

In Their Own Words

"Before joining the Devlin Peck bootcamp, I was working in corporate training but felt unsure how to fully pivot into instructional design. I knew I had relevant experience, but the process of building a portfolio and navigating the job market felt overwhelming—and I didn’t know how to stand out. I needed structure, feedback, and a way to move forward with clarity.

The bootcamp delivered exactly that. The learning programs were thorough and always evolving to reflect current trends, like integrating AI into design workflows. The coursework was challenging in a way that helped me grow, and I felt confident that I was developing real, in-demand skills.

Weekly support meetings with Sabrina and Scott created a sense of accountability, and the detailed, thoughtful feedback I received from my mentor coach made a huge difference in shaping my work.

One of the most valuable parts of the experience was the community. Meeting regularly with other students and exchanging feedback helped me stay motivated and feel supported throughout the journey. That peer connection was just as important as the technical skills—I didn’t feel like I was doing this alone.

Thanks to the academy, I left with a portfolio I’m truly proud of and a renewed sense of direction in my career. I’ve been landing interviews and feel excited for what’s ahead. My advice to others in the program? Invest in your peer group, embrace the feedback, and trust the process—it works."
