From Educator to Instructional Systems Designer

After more than 20 years in education as a teacher, Technology Coordinator, and Library Media Specialist, Sheree Caminita knew she wanted her next chapter to be different.

She had always loved weaving technology into learning experiences, but she needed guidance to move from theory to practice. “I felt confident in the fundamentals,” Sheree recalls, “but I needed help mastering the authoring tools and building a portfolio that really showed what I could do”.

That clarity brought her to Peck Academy. Surrounded by mentors and peers, she not only gained confidence with tools like Storyline and Rise but also began applying learning theory in ways that felt real and impactful.

Early on, she leaned into feedback from her community — something she admits was intimidating at first, but ultimately became one of the most valuable parts of her growth.

“Being part of the community was the highlight of the program. The feedback pushed me to see things from new perspectives and grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated.”

Fast forward: Sheree landed a role as an Instructional Systems Designer with C² Technologies, where she now designs training for the U.S. Navy. Her path from the classroom to defense training shows just how far a strong portfolio and community support can take you.

Building Real-World Skills Through Scenario Design

Sheree’s flagship project is a scenario-based eLearning module designed to train new police academy officers in de-escalation techniques.

Working closely with a subject matter expert — a police officer with years of on-the-job experience — Sheree built a realistic, story-driven learning experience.

Learners face authentic decision points and experience the natural consequences of their choices, reinforcing the importance of empathy and communication in high-stakes environments.

To bring her vision to life, she used Articulate Storyline 360 and Vyond, carefully customizing assets to align with a professional color palette and tone.

The result is a polished learning experience that blends compelling storytelling with instructional rigor. “I wanted it to feel real,” Sheree explains. “Every choice needed to matter, because in real life, it absolutely does”.

“I wanted my project to mirror real-life stakes, where every decision carried weight. That authenticity was key to making it impactful.”

After completing her flagship project and refining her portfolio, Sheree began sharing her work online.

Instead of relying solely on job boards, she networked intentionally — connecting with other instructional designers, sharing her outcomes, and celebrating the wins of her peers.

One of those connections led directly to her first big opportunity: a referral to C² Technologies.

Within days of interviewing, Sheree received an offer to design training for the U.S. Navy. Her onboarding was intense — 13 meetings in her first week, four government tests, and learning nearly ten new programs — but she quickly realized how well-prepared she was.

Concepts like design documents, project roles, and scenario-based learning weren’t intimidating; they were already part of her skillset thanks to the Academy.

Now, Sheree is thriving. She works with Navy SMEs to create multimedia learning experiences, collaborates with design teams, and even manages her own four-week sprints.

The flexibility, challenge, and purpose of her new role make it a perfect fit. “Supporting those who dedicate their lives to protecting ours is an incredible honor,” she says.

In Their Own Words

“Before joining the Academy, I was an experienced educator who felt ready for the next challenge. I had built a strong foundation in instructional design through my graduate program, but I knew I needed more than theory.

I wanted hands-on experience with authoring tools, real projects for my portfolio, and the confidence to position myself for competitive roles.

Being part of the community changed everything for me. At first, I was nervous about sharing my work publicly and receiving feedback. But the feedback I received was constructive, thoughtful, and exactly what I needed to grow.

The coursework itself gave me structure and clarity, while the mentors helped me see what it truly means to design meaningful learning experiences. I never felt like I was going through the process alone.

When I began applying for roles, I felt prepared. My portfolio showcased not only my technical skills but also my ability to design practical, scenario-based learning. Within a month, I landed my role as an Instructional Systems Designer at C² Technologies, supporting training for the U.S. Navy.

The transition was seamless because the Academy had already exposed me to design documents, SMEs, and scenario learning — all of which I encountered in my first week on the job.

Looking back, I can say with certainty that I wouldn’t be where I am today without this program. The Academy gave me the tools, the portfolio, and the confidence to make the leap into instructional design.

Most importantly, it gave me a supportive community that continues to inspire me. I am so grateful for the guidance, encouragement, and opportunities it provided.”
