From Higher Ed to FinTech

For five years, Mya Slocumb built her career as an instructional designer in higher education. While she loved supporting learners, she often felt stuck in her role—underpaid, underappreciated, and with little room for growth. What she wanted most was to transition into a corporate role, but without Storyline experience or a professional portfolio, the path forward felt out of reach.

“I began to think working in higher education was the only thing I could do,” she recalls. “I tried to make the transition on my own, but developing a flagship project without guidance felt almost impossible.”

That changed when Mya joined the Instructional Design Bootcamp (now the ID Professional Certification Program). Surrounded by peers, mentors, and hands-on guidance, she gained the confidence and skills to create a standout portfolio. Within months of finishing the program, she landed her dream job.

"Enrolling in the Devlin Peck Bootcamp was the best decision I could have made—it made my dream of transitioning into corporate work a reality."

Building Confidence with Storyline

Mya’s flagship project centered on designing an interactive learning experience that solved a real-world training challenge. Initially intimidated by Articulate Storyline, she leaned on the program's Storyline Project Lab course to build her skills step-by-step. Each lab project gave her the hands-on practice she needed, while feedback from her dedicated mentor ensured she stayed on track.

The end result was a polished, scenario-based eLearning experience that showcased not only her technical ability but also her learner-centered design approach. “Storyline was so scary to me at first, but the Bootcamp broke it down and made it easier to absorb. I finally felt like I could design at a professional level,” Mya shares.

Her flagship project is now a central feature of her portfolio, demonstrating to employers that she could tackle complex design challenges and deliver engaging, effective solutions.

Landing Her Dream Corporate Role

With her flagship project complete and portfolio live, Mya stepped into the job market with a renewed sense of purpose.

She had struggled before with rejection, but this time she felt properly equipped. She had with projects to showcase, a polished resume, and strategies for navigating interviews.

The job search wasn’t easy. “The journey was one of the most difficult yet most rewarding experiences of my life,” she shared. “There were times when I felt discouraged by the rejections, but I kept applying and trusted that the right opportunity would come.”

That perseverance paid off. Mya landed a fully remote Learning Experience Designer position with Velera, a financial technology company.

She’s proud to have broken into the corporate world, and credits the Bootcamp community, hands-on labs, and one-on-one mentorship for making it possible.

In Their Own Words

"Before joining the Devlin Peck Bootcamp, I had been working as an instructional designer in higher education for five years. While I was grateful for the experience, I felt stuck—underpaid, underappreciated, and without a clear path for growth.

I knew I wanted to move into corporate learning, but I had no Storyline experience and no professional portfolio. I tried to make the transition on my own, but I quickly realized that without hands-on guidance, it felt almost impossible.

The Bootcamp gave me exactly what I was missing. The Storyline Project Lab broke everything down step by step, and for the first time I felt like I could actually grasp the tool. Building my flagship project with support from my Bootcamp Pro and feedback from the community was invaluable. I also gained clarity on how to market myself as a corporate Learning Experience Designer, which was something I had struggled with before.

The journey wasn’t easy. The job search was one of the most difficult yet rewarding experiences of my life. There were times when I felt discouraged by the rejections, but I kept applying and trusted that the right opportunity would come. Enrolling in the Bootcamp gave me the confidence to persevere, and it reminded me that the story doesn’t end with a “no”—you just keep going until you find the “yes.”

I know without a doubt that I wouldn’t have been competitive enough for my new role without this program. The Bootcamp helped me build a professional portfolio, taught me to think like a corporate LXD, and connected me with a community that cheered me on every step of the way.

Today, I’m proud to say that I’ve achieved my long-time goal of moving into a corporate Learning Experience Designer role, and it wouldn’t have been possible without this experience."
