From Imposter Syndrome to Impact

Before joining Peck Academy, Daniel Guimont had already built a successful 15-year career in training and development within the Canadian Armed Forces as a civilian.

He advanced from fitness instructor to senior Training and Development Specialist, yet even with that depth of experience, he felt like something was missing.

When he transitioned into a new role where he was no longer the subject matter expert, imposter syndrome crept in.

Daniel knew he needed a clearer understanding of the instructional design landscape—along with hands-on technical skills—to close the gap and keep growing in his career.

“I remember looking at other students’ portfolios and wondering if I’d ever measure up.”

After that moment of doubt, Daniel enrolled in Peck Academy to push himself further—and the decision ultimately led to a polished portfolio, standout projects, and a new role as a Bilingual Learning Consultant.

Closing the Gaps, Step by Step

Daniel’s portfolio showcases his thoughtful approach to scenario-based learning and leadership development.

His flagship project, Fit to Serve, trains military personnel in leading fitness programs for their units, blending his real-world expertise with engaging, story-driven eLearning.

Another standout project, Crisis Negotiation, walks learners through high-stakes communication scenarios using AI-powered characters, branching logic, and realistic dialogue.

The quality of Daniel’s work reflects the intentionality and iterative feedback he embraced throughout the program.

From visual polish to instructional strategy, his projects illustrate the value of combining lived experience with robust instructional design practices.

“This flagship project let me combine my real-world expertise with effective learning design.”

After completing the program, Daniel secured a fully remote role as a Bilingual Learning Consultant—his highest-paying role to date.

The skills and confidence he gained helped him stand out in interviews, communicate more effectively with stakeholders, and design learning experiences rooted in behavior change.

The certification program also gave him leadership practice he now carries into his work, whether guiding team meetings or facilitating conversations with executives.

“Each challenge pushed me to close the skill gaps I knew were holding me back.”

For someone who once questioned if he'd ever measure up to the portfolios he admired, Daniel now serves as a role model in the community and in his career.

In Their Own Words

"Before joining Peck Academy, I had already built a career in training and development. I spent about 15 years working for the Canadian Armed Forces as a civilian, starting out as a fitness instructor and eventually becoming a Training and Development Specialist.

But even at that level, I realized there were critical skills I was missing—skills the Academy offered. When I later made a lateral move into a company where I was no longer a subject matter expert, imposter syndrome hit hard.

At first, I only signed up for the Articulate Storyline Lab. Learning a new computer program was intimidating, but the follow-along videos and project-based practice gave me confidence. Each small step built toward something bigger, and before long I was creating projects that I once thought were out of reach.

Eventually, I committed to the full program. I invested about an hour a day for nearly a year, building a portfolio website I was truly proud of. I remember looking at other students’ portfolios before joining—being in awe of their work and wondering if I’d ever measure up.

The truth is, the process wasn’t easy. Every milestone—the Storyline Lab, the Flagship Project, the portfolio, even building a LinkedIn presence that attracted recruiters—was hard work. But each challenge pushed me to close the skill gaps I knew were holding me back.

The community made a huge difference. Whenever I got stuck, whether on a Storyline issue, brainstorming ideas for my portfolio, or experimenting with an AI chatbot, there was always someone ready to help. Devlin’s team also hosted workshops where we learned not only from the experts but from each other.

I had the privilege of leading a peer team we called The Brain Brigade. Supporting and encouraging each other through the ups and downs of the program was inspiring, and to this day we still keep in touch. Watching them move from their first analysis documents to landing jobs they’re proud of has been an honour.

Today, I’m starting a new position as a Bilingual Learning Consultant—the highest salary of my career, fully remote. It feels surreal. This journey was anything but a walk in the park, but the Academy gave me the technical skills, the portfolio, the confidence, and the community I needed to take this leap. More than that, it helped me grow into someone who understands the hiring market and how to position myself for success."
