From Educator to eLearning Creator

After 15 years teaching secondary math, Robert Gutierrez began to question whether the classroom was still the right fit. He had moved from California to Idaho, hoping for a fresh start—but what he found was a stark difference in resources and support between the two states. The constraints of underfunded education systems made it clear: it was time for a real change.

“I had the motivation, but I needed a clear roadmap to get there.”

That’s when Robert rediscovered instructional design—a field he’d first come across years earlier through Devlin Peck’s YouTube videos. This time, he committed fully to the transition, thriving in Peck Academy and creating a high-end portfolio website.

Just months after completing Peck Academy, Robert landed a role as an Instructional Designer at Advanced Systems Group, where he now collaborates with a team of professionals on high-impact projects for clients like Google, bringing his creative vision and technical skills to life in a whole new way.

Designing With Purpose

Inside the program, Robert explored tools, tested ideas, and received targeted, expert feedback. More importantly, he began thinking—and revising—like a designer.

Robert’s flagship project, TeachWell’s Approach to Remote Work Success, showcased both his design thinking and technical expertise. Built in Articulate Storyline, the interactive learning experience guided remote professionals through realistic workplace scenarios, challenging them to make decisions that shaped outcomes.

To bring it to life, Robert combined action mapping, branching scenarios, and a mentor-style guidance system with polished visual design in Figma and wireframed layouts. He leveraged tools like MindMeister for action mapping and even integrated AI support through ChatGPT to refine content.

The result wasn’t just a polished eLearning prototype—it was proof that Robert could design with empathy, strategy, and technical precision. It became the centerpiece of his portfolio and the key project that opened the door to his new career.

"The recruiter who hired me said the reason he reached out was because of my portfolio—especially my eLearning projects created at Peck Academy.”

Robert now works as part of a team of 11 instructional designers at Advanced Systems Group. The transition has been smooth and rewarding, thanks in part to the Academy’s hands-on, feedback-rich approach that mirrors real workplace scenarios.

“The Academy’s unlimited 1:1 support, peer collaboration, and workshops directly prepared me for this kind of work. That combination of hands-on practice and expert feedback gave me the confidence and skills to deliver effective solutions right away.”

One of Robert’s very first projects at ASG put his new skills to the test. He was tasked with transforming a static slide deck into a fully engaging eLearning experience. Instead of simply repackaging slides, Robert applied the performance-focused process he learned at Peck Academy:

  • Defined measurable objectives that aligned training with business goals.
  • Replaced bullet-heavy slides with visuals, narration, and scenario-driven interactivity.
  • Applied Mayer’s Multimedia Principles to balance cognitive load and increase retention.
  • Worked iteratively with stakeholders to validate design decisions before full development.

The result was a professional, learner-centered solution that exceeded expectations and confirmed to Robert—and his new team—that he was ready to contribute from day one.

In Their Own Words

"After 15 years in secondary education, I knew I wanted to move into instructional design, but I also knew I would need help learning the tools, building the skills, and creating the portfolio pieces required to land a role. I had the motivation, but I needed a clear roadmap to get there. Peck Academy provided exactly that.

The coursework was structured to build practical, real-world skills step by step. I was not just learning theory. I was creating projects I could showcase to employers. The community was equally valuable. Being surrounded by supportive peers and mentors made the experience collaborative, motivating, and fun.

Because of the work I completed in the academy, I am now employed as an Instructional Designer. The recruiter who hired me told me that what caught his attention and got me the interview was my portfolio. He was especially impressed with my work and the projects I created in Storyline 360.

Peck Academy did not just give me skills. It gave me direction, a sense of belonging in a new career field, and the tools to get hired."
